A vernier caliper is a measuring instrument used to accurately measure dimensions and external objects. Here is some information on how to use it.

  1. Assembly and Parts
    • The vernier caliper consists of two main parts.
      • The fixed part   contains a fixed jaw connected to the main measuring scale. It is graduated in millimeters on one side and inches on the other.
      • The moving part   houses the movable jaw and the measuring vernier. The measuring vernier is graduated in millimeters for highly accurate fraction measurement.
  2. How to read
    • We look at the vernier scale at the zero position and read the number to its left from the main measuring scale (A) in the correct millimeters.
    • We look at the vernier scale and identify the first point of perfect alignment between the ruler’s scale and the vernier scale. We read the vernier scale number recorded at the point of alignment (B) in fractions of a millimeter.
  3. Accuracy
    • The accuracy of the vernier can be determined from the device’s details panel.
    • In general, if the number of scales on the vernier scale is n = 50, then the accuracy is 0.02 mm.

micrometer

A micrometer is a precision measuring instrument used to measure dimensions with high accuracy. Here’s how to use and read it.

  1. Identifying the parts of a micrometer
    • The micrometer consists of several parts, including the frame, the sleeve, and the ruler.
    • The frame should be in the palm of your hand, and your little finger should be inside the frame.
  2. Measurement using a micrometer
    • Hold the micrometer in your right hand.
    • Use your thumb and forefinger to rotate the sleeve.
    • Select the size you wish to measure with your left hand.

The speed square
is a small triangular measuring tool that allows you to draw straight lines, find angles, and determine slopes. The speed square is sometimes referred to as a triangle square, carpenter’s square, or roof square. This tool is useful in DIY and construction projects. Let me explain how to use the speed square and its various features:

  1. Main parts of the quickbox
    • Size: Quicksquares come in various sizes, typically around 6 inches long. Larger squares are also available for bigger projects.
    • Material: Most speed squares are made of aluminum or durable plastic to withstand drops and stay upright.
    • The engraved markings are all etched onto the surface of the box, not printed. This ensures the lines remain clearly and precisely visible even after years of use.
    • The lip or guard allows you to fix the square to the side of the wood to get a straight line.
    • The axis is a small point on the edge of the square called the “axis.” You can use this point to find the desired angle without using a protractor.
    • These lead lines   correspond to the marks on the edge of the square. Using these points, you can stabilize the pencil and move the square along the wood to obtain precise lines.
    • The common angle   guide contains a list of common angles used by carpenters. You can align these inside angles with your project using a pivot point.
  2. How to use the Quick Box
