In this training module, we will introduce attendees to the key features of text-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). We will discuss who may benefit from text-based AAC and cover common features found in text-based AAC. After the introduction, we will provide a detailed overview of how to use the Predictable AAC app, using it as a case study. This will include a comprehensive look at the appโ€™s full feature set, covering core functions as well as settings and customization options for speech, accessibility, appearance, and other features. We will explore functionalities such as symbol prediction, translation functions, using ChatGPT, and making calls within the app.Key topics covered:

  • An introduction to text-based AAC – includes defining text-based AAC, principles for rate enhancement, populations that may find benefit, key features of common text-based AAC systems, software and apps.
  • Understanding more about rate enhancement – why rate enhancement is important to consider and examples of ways that rate may be improved for people with physical and other needs
  • A deep dive into the app, Predictable – including a comprehensive overview of the keyboard page, grid section, feature keyboard, and a clear exploration of the settings and customisation options that can be used to personalise and customise the app to meet a userโ€™s physical, sensory, cognitive and language needs over time. This includes the options for voice banking, voice use, floor holding, accessibility settings for eye tracking, head tracking and settings for physical accommodations.
