What Is GIS?

Hello, and welcome to your online course on Getting started with ArcGIS Pro.

My name is Omasan and I am a Spatial Data Scientist, with over 18 years experience in using GIS and geospatial technologies. My background ranges from GIS and Remote Sensing for counter-narcotics to GIS for Emergency Response and Environmental Monitoring

I have created this course because I understand what it is like to feel frustrated with the steep learning curve to understanding GIS. To struggle to identify the component parts of the ArcGIS platform and understand how it all fits together; and even to ask yourself, what is this GIS thing anyway and how does it work?

In this course, you will get clear knowledge and information as well as practical how-to tips on GIS techniques and workflows, to improve your efficiency and productivity with GIS.  You will learn how to:

1. Define what a GIS is and what it’s component parts are

1. Explore the functionality of ArcGIS Pro Desktop GIS
2. Prepare CSV data for use in ArcGIS Pro.
3. Review the different ways to add data into ArcGIS Pro.

This course is intended for learners new to GIS, who are looking for an easy and quick way to understand what the software and technology can do.  It is not intended for anyone with over 6 months to 1 year’s experience using GIS.
