Description

This course includes defining trauma, trauma-informed care, domestic violence, and sexual violence. The course discusses the importance of why occupational therapists, health care professionals, and non-health care professionals need to be educated about trauma-informed care when working in the populations of domestic violence and sexual violence. The course reveals the interventions and strategies that can be implemented when working with clients from the domestic violence and sexual violence population. The course includes literature review research in trauma-informed care importance with health care professionals, domestic violence, and sexual violence. The course explains what I have done in my occupational therapy doctoral capstone experience which is teaching Elmhurst University Master of Occupational Therapy Students and faculty members on the class I created called, Understanding and Applying trauma-informed Care in the Populations of Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence. I taught the presentation which was a 3 hour lecture/lab which included open discussion questions, group work activity with the students, and a case study activity. I created the case study which was about the character from the Netflix T.V series called, Maid. The case study reflected her life and she was trying to navigate living her life on raising her 4 year old, Maddy. I also taught 2 classes called Lunch and Learns during the students’ lunch time. The first class was about intersectionality, implicit bias, microaggressions, explicit bias, cultural sensitivity, and cultural humility. This was also a very open minded experience with the students. It was also an open discussion as well. The second lunch and learn was called, Dance to Feel, Dance to Heal. This was a very fun class because we all danced together! We discussed questions about trauma, how to heal, the importance of dance going through emotions. Enjoy the course, let me know if you have any questions, and please let know what you think!Β Thank you all so much!
